Garment Care
Most of the environmentally nasty stuff happens to your clothes after you buy them. Save the earth by caring for your garments in the right way and reduce up to two-thirds of your garments’ carbon footprint after you take it home. The best part? It isn’t as difficult as you think. Wash Less
Washing and drying a load every two days creates around 440kg of CO2 each year. Overwashing also sends your garment to its grave faster, so go easy on the laundry loads and be good to the earth.
Line Dry
Line drying your garments for just 6 months out of the year can eliminate up to 317kg of greenhouse gases annually. That’s the same energy required to drive a Prius over 2896 kilometres. When line drying, turn your coloured garments inside out to reduce fading. Hang shirts from the hem, and pants and skirts from the waistband so the clothes peg marks are in a less conspicuous spot (which means less ironing later).
Cold is Gold
Washing on cold preserves the life of your garments and helps your clothes live a little longer. Organic garments which don’t have chemicals to protect them from the beating of a 60 degree furnace-like washer will start feeling the heat. Also, switching from hot water to cold or warm water can help prevent 226kg of CO2 from entering the atmosphere every year.
Microfibre Pollution
When you wash anything made from synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon and acrylic, tiny bits of plastic called microfibres are shed. With each wash, plastic fibres from these synthetic garments are making their way from washing machines into rivers and oceans. The tiny fibres are extremely small and almost invisible making it hard for sewage treatment plants to effectively filter them out. To reduce microfibre shedding, gently handwash your synthetic garments in cold water.
